A better life on Southbourne Overcliff while staying at a nice Bournemouth bed and breakfast

Recently, I visited a relative who has a bed and breakfast close to Southbourne Overcliff, Bournemouth and was amazed at the feeling of community that the scents and sounds that the Overcliff generates on a sunny morning.

There were dog walkers all over the place and all gave a cheery 'good morning' welcome. I even stopped and chatted to several who were quite willing to talk. The photo on the top right is of a friendly man who told me all about his dog ball throwing stick. You can see by the look on the dog's face that he's loving it.

There were also lots of people running and jogging too. I even saw a place at the top of the high cliffs for dare devil hang gliding and paragliding pilots to assemble.

Above all, it was the feeling of community, the smell of the grasses that are kept long because it is a special nature reserve site and the wonderful views across the beaches and the water that attracted me.

I must impose on my relative again for an overnight stay at their Newpoint Hotel, Southbourne. It seems like a nice place to be. Maybe I could retire there and join the Overcliff walkers each morning for a friendly chat.

Bye for now

Why I will never again worry about computer viruses

I will never again worry about computer viruses because a year ago I replaced my old computer operating system for a new one that has a different architecture, many say better, that is not susceptible to computer viruses in the same way as the old one.

What made the change in operating system even better was that the new one was free and will be regularly updated in the future free!

So how can something that is distributed worldwide free possibly be better than something that is distributed worldwide and is very expensive?

The answer lies in the magic of 'open source software'. Countless programmers have contributed to this software to improve it as a community effort and their improvements then become the starting point for other programmers to improve it yet again. A single corporation could never afford to pay for such volumes of expertise, however rich and powerful.

I like this operating system because it is an operating system that is based on goodwill.

It is extremely secure and not susceptible to computer viruses in the same way as the one that is distributed with almost every desktop computer.

It is also very powerful, fast and easy to use.

Ubuntu is the name of this magical system - technically, it is a Linux distribution.

It comes with masses of free 'open source software' too.

You can find all about it at Ubuntu.com, where you can also find out how to download it free.

I will never worry about computer viruses again now I have this computer operating system and for me that means I will have escaped computer viruses for a better life.

Bye for now

Escaping to a better life with a camper van or motorhome.

As well as an online writer, I'm a keen amateur folk musician.

I had my first starter / really cheap camper van last year.

It was great using it to go to lots of folk music festivals around the South of England.

During the week, I would go off and write in the laybys of Exmoor with the birds singing all around and wonderful views.

It was / is a 1993 hightop transit van conversion with a 2.5 litre diesel engine with a little gas kitchen and a little room with a portapotti.

Unfortunately, it needs double de clutching to get into second gear after a few miles (well I did say it was cheap) - but maybe the garage could fix that with spending a bit of money.

Making the bed up, which is amidships, is a bit of a pain and takes most of the van because it is a short wheel base vehicle.

I have to say that it hasn't ever let me down except for once when the alternator went mad and cooked the starter battery.

However, it only does 25 miles to the gallon or there abouts and with the cost of fuel now, I've decided to consider passing it on and perhaps looking for something more fuel economic.

So it has been with a dealer for touching up and sale for the last three weeks.

Problem is that I would like to go for a big vehicle with a fixed bed but that's expensive to use as a primary vehicle.

Going for a smaller vehicle means even less room that I currently have which isn't really enough.

To be honest, I don't know whether to stick with what I've got, cash in a load of savings and get something posh and luxurious or get a little sports car and do bed and breakfast which would also mean I could venture abroad more easily.

Today, I drove my wife's posh almost new car and learned how the other half live and it made my old vehicle seem very, well, old.

I wonder if there are any other camper van owners who are also writers or musicians and have used it to change their lives. Or even people who like the idea and would like to discuss the pros and cons.

If so, I would love to hear from you.

For more general discussion about options for escaping to a better life check out my earlier post and the interesting comments here:

Discussion about escaping to a better life

Update - I've got my camper van back and am going to stick with it for a while. If I can run home made bio diesel in it, my costs would really come down. Time to find out more.

Welcome to my new blog about escaping to a better life

In this blog I will suggest alternative life styles that intrigue me and offer the lifestyle for open discussion. Hopefully, together, we really can discover if it is possible to escape to a better life.

Sometimes the lifestyles will be hypothetical, sometimes they will be real life styles I have seen and have been able to document. In all cases, they will be lifestyles that I find in some small or large way attractive.

If you are interested in a life style change and have a blog or web log that discusses alternative lifestyles, I will be very happy to hear from you. I strongly believe that one person can identify a problem or opportunity but it takes many to find a solution. The bigger our community of people looking for alternative life styles, the more chance we have of finding one that suits us individually and collectively.

From the beginning, I will admit that I am a dreamer. Creative and artistic activities are, by far, the interests I find most attractive. I can't draw but I can write and have worked for many years as an author on the Internet.

Topics I expect to be adding to this blog in the near future include all or some of the following:
  • Can a rural area really offer better livings for people working online?
  • Does living in a hotter country bring a happier life?
  • Is it better to live in the country than the town?
  • Are some places just a lot more fun to live in?
As a full time writer working online each day, I expect the articles about escaping to a better life to be added quite quickly.

I look forward to seeing you again and reading your comments.

By for now
